Emerald Airport

Council owns and operates Emerald Airport, located 6 km south of Emerald’s town centre. The airport is serviced by Qantas and Virgin Australia for regular passenger flights.

Please allow plenty of time for parking, checking in and processing before your flight. Check-in closes AT LEAST 30 minutes before scheduled departure. You should arrive at the airport 1 HOUR before your scheduled departure.

Security screening applies to all regular passenger flights in line with Federal Aviation Regulations. For more information on allowances and processes, visit the Australian Government “TravelSECURE” website.

As well as a facility for public passengers, the airport also caters for ad-hock general aviation users, medivac operations, rental car operations and aircraft refueling.

  • Airport parking

    The airport feature a long term carpark, a short term carpark, a drop off/collection zone and a rental car carpark.

    For drop off and collection of passengers, be sure to follow signage to the ‘drop off’ zone located within the short-term carpark.  The first hour in the short term carpark is FREE. The short-term carpark located closest to the terminal building.

    The long-term carpark is located on the south-eastern side of the airport, fees apply.

    Payment can be made at any automatic payment machine on site with cash or EFTPOS. If you have any problems with payments or lost tickets, press the ‘HELP’ button on either of the pay stations.

    The following rental car companies currently operate from Emerald Airport:

  • Local transport

    Emerald Taxis – (07) 4982 1600

    There is no local bus service in Emerald.

  • Airport High Fly Café

    The Airport High Fly Café is located in the Departures Lounge.

    The café is an EFTPOS only kiosk that serves an array of sweet and savoury treats as well as coffee and cold drinks.

    Open Monday to Friday servicing regular passenger flights.

    High Fly Café is also licensed from 10.00 am.

  • General aviation

    A general aviation parking apron is available in Emerald with lighting and aircraft tie down facilities.

    General aviation users MUST NOT enter the RPT Security Zone.

    Aviation fuel is available from Shell Aviation: 4987 5576 or 0418 608 866.

    There are 5 aircraft landing area (ALA’s) managed by Central Highlands Regional Council that are suitable for light aircraft landings.

  • RFDS Aeromedical Transfer Facility

    RFDS (Queensland Section) Aeromedical Transfer Project takes centre stage at launch event 

     The Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) aeromedical patient transfer project took centre stage at a special project launch event at the Emerald Airport today.  

     Invited guests were given an early glimpse into one of the region’s most significant upcoming health infrastructure achievements through a collection of micro stories that capture the impact, collaboration and vision driving the project. 

     Mayor Janice Moriarty said, ‘The five short videos are a collection of short or micro stories mainly featuring the roles the Rotary Club of Emerald, Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) and Central Highlands Regional Council have played in making this project a reality at the Emerald Airport. 

     ‘All three organisations, saw the value in capturing the unique story of how community come together, formed vital partnerships, secured the funds and donations to build this significant life-saving health facility in rural Queensland.  

     ‘Hearing these inspiring micro stories and learning about the generosity of the wonderful people, groups and businesses in our region will fill everyone with pride’, she said.   

     The facility, purpose built to improve emergency medical transfers in all weather conditions, represents a major investment in patient safety, comfort, and survival outcomes across Central Queensland. 

     The launch event brought partners and contributors together for the first full screening of the microstory series. Attendees were taken behind the scenes on a visual journey of what is set to become Queensland’s only aeromedical facility of its kind, including the innovative aircraft drivethrough hangar and emergency treatment pod designed to support seamless, allweather patient transfers. 

     The stories will soon be shared more broadly by Council and its partners to acknowledge the collective effort behind the project, highlighting the power of partnership and strengthen advocacy for continued collaboration on initiatives that deliver longlasting regional benefits. 

      Construction of the RFDS (Queensland Section) aeromedical pod and dedicated patient transfer facility is scheduled for completion later this year.
