New shopping centre is on the cards for Emerald

Council has this month approved a rebate of $72,000 for a change in land use of a Codenwarra Road property so that it can become the home of a proposed shopping centre in Emerald.
To be developed by Development Directive Pty Ltd, the proposed centre will have a supermarket, 8 individual retail outlets and 268 car parking spaces.
Mayor Janice Moriarty said: ‘Projects such as these are proof that council’s Economic Stimulus Policy is achieving its aims, namely, delivering economic development and growth opportunities across the Central Highlands region.
‘The proposed shopping centre represents exactly the type of investment council encourages through its Economic Stimulus Policy. This is about supporting projects that make a real difference to our communities by creating jobs and by diversifying our economy,’ she said.
Other applications for rebates approved under this policy at last week’s council meeting were for:
- a new craft shed for the Gemfield Lapidary and Craft Club in Roy Day Park in Sapphire worth $6,950. Once built, this will increase the club’s workshop capacity and the delivery of training programs and events as well as enable the introduction of commercial-grade metal casting operations
- a new 1,100 square metre shed for Fat Man Small Motors at 12 Ballard Street in Emerald worth $15,833. Once built this will be used for the sale, repair and servicing of agricultural and recreational motorcycles, ATVs and parts
‘It is all about having both a vision for growth in the region and positioning our region as being open for development and business,’ Mayor Moriarty said.
