Work on Emerald Airport’s new patient transfer facility begins

Emerald Airport is set to gain a state-of-the-art Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) patient transfer facility, with the concept design completed and engineering designs for structures and civil works currently underway.
Funding has been secured through Queensland Government’s Resources Community Infrastructure Fund (RCIF), as well as the RFDS and Rotary Club of Emerald’s dedicated community fundraising efforts. It aligns with broader state and federal priorities to enhance medivac support in regional Queensland.
Emerald was identified as a crucial hub for patient movements by state and federal health agencies, given its role in maximising access to healthcare facilities and improving patient survival rates across the region.
The facility will feature an aircraft drive-through covered area, ensuring all-weather patient transfers between aircraft and ambulances.
By protecting patients and medical staff from Emerald’s extreme weather conditions, the facility aims to reduce stress and discomfort for those in transit between medical facilities.
Central Highlands Regional Council Mayor Janice Moriarty commented on the works.
‘It’s amazing to see this project coming to life, it’s a huge win for everyone – patients, medivac crews, and our community as a whole,’ she said.
‘Being able to transfer patients safely and quickly, no matter the weather, is a massive step forward for regional healthcare. This is about providing comfort and care when people need it most.’
Construction of the facility is expected to be completed in 2026. This project is the result of a partnership between the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Central Highlands Regional Council, and Rotary, with the construction tenders to be issued before the end of the financial year.
